Hotels
The Carlyle
Upper East Side · From $1,100/night
The standard by which New York hotels are measured. Bemelmans Bar — with its Ludwig Bemelmans murals — is alone worth staying for. Quiet, discreet, impeccably staffed.
Crosby Street Hotel
SoHo · From $850/night
Kit Kemp’s singular aesthetic: bold colour, custom upholstery, serious art. The only hotel in New York that feels genuinely original. Central to SoHo and Tribeca both.
The Mark
Upper East Side · From $1,200/night
Jacques Grange’s interiors are the finest in the city — graphic, layered, not trying to be anything other than itself. Jean-Georges restaurant downstairs is among the city’s best.
Nomo SoHo
The quieter, more considered option in the neighbourhood. Good light, sensible rooms, an excellent position between SoHo and Tribeca. The price reflects its honesty.
Tribeca
The city’s most quietly affluent neighbourhood. Converted 19th-century warehouses, broad cobblestone streets, and a density of very good restaurants that requires no announcement. On a weekday morning it belongs almost entirely to those who live there.
BREAKFAST & COFFEE
Arcade Bakery
220 Church St
Inside a building lobby, open only until sold out. The focaccia and morning buns draw a quiet, knowing crowd. Arrive by 9am.
Kaffe 1668
275 Greenwich St
Serious coffee, good space, unhurried. A reliable anchor for a morning in the neighbourhood.
LUNCH
Locanda Verde
377 Greenwich St Reserve
Andrew Carmellini’s Italian-American kitchen in the Greenwich Hotel. The burrata and the ricotta toast are perennial. The room is excellent — long, warm, unhurried.
Kiki’s
130 Division St
Greek, no reservations, cash only, and worth every inconvenience. The lamb chops and the room — tiled, loud, familial — make it one of the city’s more joyful lunches.
DINNER
Frenchette
241 W Broadway Reserve
The best French bistro in New York, and it isn’t close. The steak frites, the wine list’s depth in natural bottles, the noise level that signals everyone is having a good time.
Tiny’s
135 W Broadway
A pink townhouse from 1810. Three floors, candlelit, surprisingly good kitchen. Book the upstairs room. One of the most charming interiors in downtown Manhattan.
BARS
Ward III
111 Reade St
A serious cocktail bar that doesn’t perform seriousness. The bartenders know their craft and the room stays pleasant throughout the evening.
SHOPS
The Row
17 Howard St
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s label, in its own townhouse. Considered, quiet, unhurried. The antithesis of a typical retail experience — which is the point entirely.
Shinola
177 Franklin St
Watches, leather, audio. The Tribeca outpost is smaller and better curated than most. Worth visiting for the objects alone.
